Corporate Volunteering

We have recently seen an upturn in the amount of organisations taking part in Corporate Volunteering Programmes but what exactly are they and why do they make good business sense?

Corporate volunteering works by offering the hands on help of your employees to support good causes and local communities. According to Business in the Community (BITC):

  • 87% volunteers report an improved perception of their employer
  • 82% report feeling more committed to their employer
  • 70% of employee volunteers reported developing their time management, communication, influencing, decision-making and leadership skills
  • 81% of community partners had an improved perception of the employer they worked with and 99% would recommend the company to others

Local community projects are often facing increased workloads whilst being faced with cuts in local funding so by offering the help of corporate volunteers the resource to these organisations is increased

Where to start

As with any workplace wellbeing programme one of the first responsibilities is to seek management approval for suggested policies and procedures and integrate these into the wider wellbeing programme. An internal working group or health forum will usually oversee the volunteering programme as part of the wider project. The programme must be valuable and meaningful to the business and must align to the mission, values and goals. Using outside organisations (Timebank, Giveaday, Volunteering Matters etc) can help to match opportunities to the skills and time you have to offer. Corporate Volunteering helps build relationships within the community and are a perfect example corporate social responsibility and benefits all involved.

Things to consider

  • What budget is available to support projects and corporate volunteering?
  • How much time will be granted to each employee for volunteering project?
  • How often will you run the Programme?
  • How will you match employee interests against volunteering opportunities?
  • How will you find volunteering opportunities?
  • How will other team members cope in the absence of the volunteer?
  • How will you promote the programme to employees?
  • How will you measure the success?

Measuring success

As with any workplace programme it has to bring both qualitative and quantitative data to measure its success to employer, employee and beneficiary. Simple pre and post questionnaires or impact on employee engagement surveys are good ways to measure the programme. Asking for feedback from organisations, which you have helped, can help boost the programme within the organisation as employees can see they are making a real difference by volunteering.

Other things to consider

  • Health and Safety – pre programme visit to measure the risk
  • Insurance – who cover employees while off site?
  • Who will supply the goods and materials to do the job?
  • What potential publicity will be available for both parties ?

Striking the balance between employee interest and what works for the business can be a challenge but will be worth the effort. Volunteering can enhance the learning experience of the employee and new skills are often transferable back to the workplace.
